Sixth-seeded KCC make KBL history as Heo Ung's five triples seal title in Goyang- May 13, 2026Busan KCC Egis completed the most improbable championship run in Korean Basketball League history on Tuesday, becoming the first sixth-seeded team ever to win the KBL title with a 76-68 victory over Goyang Sono in Game 5 of the LG Electronics 2025-26 Championship Finals.
Finals MVP Ung Heo (183-G-1993) delivered the clinching performance, drilling five three-pointers for 17 points in 36 minutes to claim the award with 31 of 84 media votes. The achievement completed an extraordinary family legacy Ung Heo's father Heo Jae and brother Hoon Heo (181-G-1995) have both won Playoffs MVP in previous seasons, making the Heos the first three-generation Finals MVP family in KBL history. Hoon Heo was equally vital with 15 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals in nearly 40 minutes, while Joon-Young Choi (200-SG-1994) added 15 points and six rebounds. Long Shawn (208-F-1993, college: Louisiana, agency: Pensack Sports) dominated inside with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, and Song Kyo-chang contributed 14 points and nine rebounds as coach Lee Sang-min's squad produced a balanced team effort that Goyang could not match. KCC set the tone with a 25-12 first quarter that put Sono in an immediate hole. Though the hosts fought back outscoring KCC in the third and fourth quarters they never reclaimed the lead. Knight Nathan (208-F/C-1997, college: William & Mary) was magnificent for Sono with 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting, but Lee Jong-hyun struggled at 5-of-17 despite seven assists, and the Filipino import Quiambao Kevin (193-SF-2001) could not replicate his heroics from Game 4. Sono had staved off elimination with a dramatic 81-80 Game 4 victory in Busan Lee Jong-hyun scoring the go-ahead basket with 0.9 seconds remaining but the momentum did not carry over. "We've lost once now we will finish it in Game 5," Lee Sang-min had promised after that defeat. He delivered. KCC's playoff path was remarkable throughout. They swept third-seeded Wonju DB Promy in the opening round, beat Anyang JKJ Red Boosters 3-1 in the semifinals, and took the finals 4-1 despite finishing the regular season at just 24-30 the lowest-seeded champion in KBL's 28-year finals history. |
